In Every Stance, a Story
To our students, teachers, coaches, partners — and the schools we hope to visit next.
In Singapore, harmony isn’t an abstract ideal; it’s our everyday — the way we greet one another, share tables, and learn side-by-side. Yet it’s easy to take this for granted. Unity Through Martial Arts exists to help us notice it again, feel it again, and keep it alive.
Why martial arts?
On the surface, martial arts make us stronger and more disciplined. But beneath every stance is a story — a set of values shaped by community and tradition.
-
Wushu invites respect and humility — we bow before we begin, we listen before we move.
-
Silat reminds us of community and solidarity — we watch out for one another, we learn as a circle.
-
Silambam nurtures determination and harmony with nature — a simple bamboo staff teaching control, balance, and care.
These lessons are not “someone else’s culture.” They’re values we can all practise, together.
What students experience
A lively hall. Three coaches. Many accents. One rhythm.
Students warm up, try a new stance, laugh at a wobble, try again — and suddenly a stranger becomes a partner.
They leave not only with new skills, but with new eyes: more curious, more open, more appreciative of what makes Singapore, Singapore.
What unites us
I believe our strength is our openness — the willingness to learn about one another, to be curious, to accept, and to appreciate. We may come from different races, but we share common values and a shared home. When we practise together, those values become visible — and unforgettable.
A note of thanks — and an invitation
To every student who stepped forward, every teacher who trusted us, every coach who gave your heart: thank you.
To schools considering this programme: I’d love to partner with you to create a warm, meaningful session for your students — one that leaves them a little stronger in body, and a lot kinder in spirit.
If this resonates with you, let’s connect.
Many cultures, one heart.
Warmly,
Unity Through Martial Arts Team
